This photo reminds me of the Diego Rivera poster. Our group was in Panajachel, a small village on the shores of Lake Atitlan, when I saw this woman, carrying the cala lillies on her head. I ran after her and, in my best Spanish, asked her if I could take a picture of her from the back. She consented after I agreed to give her the usual 10 quetzal (about $1).

I had stopped the woman in the middle of the sidewalk, surrounded by bright sunlight and throngs of people, bicycles and cars. This makes for a terrible background and an overly contrasty photograph. Across the street I saw a white-washed wall and the woman consented (for another 10 quetzal) to go there with me. I quickly took her picture there in the shade with plain background.
